Artists are activists.

Artists are powerful. A force to be reckoned with. It’s a simple equation: more art, better world.

Getty Unshuttered is a free photo sharing app from the Getty Museum. It’s built to be a positive community for teen artists to raise their voices for social good. To inspire each other. To grow as artists.

What are you passionate about? What do you want to change? Snap it. Share it. Energize others to act. That’s a virtuous cycle, right?

A museum made a photo sharing app?

We did. Why? Because we believe everyone is an artist and we wanted a place where they could gather, share, and learn. Is it going to compete with big social media apps? No. It’s not meant to. Were they built for artists? No, they weren’t. Unshuttered is different. It’s supportive and free.

One incredible night

On June 26, teens took over the Getty Center for one night, as the museum became an eye-popping immersive showcase for photos from the Getty Unshuttered community. With almost 400 artists and 800 photographs, we celebrated the voices of teen artists from L.A. and beyond.

A celebration of teen voices. Interactive experiences, music, free snacks, and more.

This event was presented in partnership with the USC School of Cinematic Arts and inspired by Genesis Motor America.
