Getty Unshuttered launched in 2018 with a vision to engage with teens in Los Angeles and communities beyond the city through the creative medium of photography. Over the course of an 8-week, on-site program at Getty, 23 Los Angeles-area high school students worked closely with photography mentors to learn the fundamental skills of the medium. They identified social issues of personal importance and began to explore them. Collectively, their work addresses questions of identity, trauma, representation, and equity. They produced work in a variety of styles, including portraiture, landscape, and documentary photography, offering a glimpse into what matters to teenagers living in Los Angeles. The program culminated with an exhibition, LA #Unshuttered: Teens Reframing Life in Los Angeles, held at the Getty Museum June 20, 2018–January 20, 2019.
The exhibition was accompanied by the launch of an app, Getty Unshuttered, which invites teenagers all over the world to submit photographs in response to weekly challenges. The app also offers tutorials for users to learn fundamentals of photography such as light, color, and composition.
